The time-event matrices used by Streufert and associates to depict human information processing in complex task environments have similar characteristics. The use and construction of these matrices are described. The technique may be useful across sciences to depict the consequences of complex phenomena.

Complexity theory is concerned with nonequilibrium dissipative structures, that is processing systems that absorb and utilize matter and energy to re-new themselves, adapt, and change. They are systems that function in a nonlinear fashion, that are difficult to predict, and that may utilize feedback from prior activities to modify their own current behavior. That feedback loop is of considerable importance.
